Where your score sits

average adult 40 roughly 92% accuracy
good 60-70 comfortable for office work
fast 80+ top tier of test takers
elite 100+ a few percent of typists

These are words per minute on a one minute test, which is the number most people mean when they talk about typing speed. Accuracy matters as much as the figure itself: a 70 WPM run at 88% accuracy is slower in practice than a 60 WPM run at 98%, because every error costs you the time to notice it, delete it, and type it again.

Why 60 seconds became the standard

A minute is long enough to smooth out a shaky start and short enough to hold full concentration, which is why it became the default length for typing benchmarks. It is the score most people quote, and the length most online leaderboards use.

Getting a fair reading

  • Sit properly: feet flat, elbows near a right angle, wrists floating rather than planted.
  • Do one warmup run first. Cold starts read five to ten WPM low.
  • Aim for 96% accuracy or better before you chase speed.
  • Use the keyboard you actually type on every day.

When the test ends, the results screen shows your slowest keys and can build a drill from them. A few minutes spent on the keys that are actually failing moves a one minute score faster than repeating the test over and over. If you want a structured route instead, the free touch typing course starts at the home row and works outward.

Questions people ask

Is a 1 minute typing test accurate?

A 60 second test is the most popular way to benchmark typing speed, and it is accurate enough for comparing yourself over time. It does read a little higher than longer tests because concentration never dips: expect your 5 minute score to be 8 to 15 WPM lower.

What is a good score on a 1 minute typing test?

The adult average is about 40 WPM. Above 60 WPM is good, above 80 WPM is fast, and above 100 WPM is elite territory. See the full breakdown in what is a good WPM.

How many words can you type in 1 minute?

By definition, your WPM: a typist at 40 WPM types roughly 40 standard words (200 characters) in one minute. Fast typists at 80+ WPM double that.

Do employers use 1 minute typing tests?

Some do for screening, but most job typing tests run 3 to 5 minutes to measure sustained speed. If you are preparing for one, practice with the 5 minute test and aim to keep accuracy at 95% or higher.
