Numbers: everyone's weakest keys

Run any per-key analysis on a competent typist and the same pattern appears: letters are fast, digits are slow. It is not a talent problem, it is an exposure problem. Ordinary English text is overwhelmingly letters, so even someone who types all day accumulates almost no practice on 1 through 0. The number row also sits two rows above home position, making it the longest, least certain reach on the keyboard. The result: typists who cruise at 70 WPM on words often drop under 30 WPM the moment the content turns numeric.

Number-row technique

Touch typing the number row follows one rule: each finger reaches straight up to the number above its own column, then returns home. Left hand: pinky on 1, ring on 2, middle on 3, index covering 4 and 5. Right hand: index covering 6 and 7, middle on 8, ring on 9, pinky on 0. Keep your eyes on the screen; glancing down to find a digit costs more time than the keystroke itself.
